University of Charleston Alumni Newsletter (Spring 2010)

 

Our third annual Greek Weekend and our first annual Spring Alumni Weekend will be held during the Governor's Cup races on April 23 - 24, 2010! This year the racing event has a new sponsor, Huddleston Bolen.

 

An exciting addition to the weekend this year will be our Alum of the Year announcement on Friday evening!

 

All alumni are welcome to attend ... we have several Greek organizations planning on a presence ... and an alumni group of Radiology grads will be there too! I am very excited about this year and the growth of the weekend.

If you are interested in attending, please email alumni@ucwv.edu ... and if you have a Greek or Radiology affiliation, I'll get you in touch with that contact as well.

Friday, April 23

Greek & All Alumni Reception @ 5:30 p.m.

Riggleman Rotunda and Patio

 

Alum of the Year Announcement @ 7:30 p.m. - Riggleman Hall Rotunda

 

At approximately 9:00 p.m., our alumni will reconvene at

Murad's Restaurant (200 35th St., Charleston) to continue socializing.

This part of the evening's festivities is not a UC-sponsored event.

 

Saturday, April 24

While the crew races for Governor's Cup are taking place on the Kanawha ...

 

Greek and All Alumni Tent from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. - Riverbank

We'll supply the food & festive beverage ... and together we'll bring the fun!

Have you visited the new Athletic Website yet?

Check out the new Golden Eagles athletics web site! UC's new SID, Bill McDaniel, says the site is still under construction, so don't worry if you don't see everything yet, but you'll love the vibrant photos, calendar, polls, Athletes of the Week, live stats and up-to-date info on UC athletics.  Check it out at www.ucwvathletics.com. You can also sign up for the UC Athletics Newsletter online by clicking on the e-News button.

 

Bill is also working on a link that will allow you to order customized t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. You'll be able to pick your own UC logo and piece of apparel and put them together. (We even plan to have a MHC Alumni logo.)I'll keep you posted to let you know when this new feature is available.

Pharmacy Graduates to Join the Alumni Ranks!

We're excited that our School of Pharmacy will graduate our first class of graduates on May 2, during our regular commencement ceremonies. This group of doctoral candidates will join the ranks of alumni and we're proud to be able to include their news in the Alumni eNewsletter as well. Look for news from them as they study for and take their Boards and begin working in this exciting field.

Upcoming Events

April 13 - John Allison, former president and CEO of BB&T, will speak to students on principles and values in the afternoon, and will make a public appearance, speaking about the financial crisis, at 6:30 p.m. You can preview his "Principles and Values" talk on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDAn51D_YxY.  As the president of BB&T, Allison was a key player during the economic meltdown, and promises to have valuable insights for the audience.  Format will include Q&A, so get your questions ready.  His visit is part of the BB&T program on the moral foundations of capitalism, and is brought to you with the help of SIFE. 

 

 

April 14 - The Eighth Annual Academic Showcase at the University of Charleston will be held on Wednesday, April 14 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The showcase, featuring poster and classroom presentations, highlights the academic achievements of UC students and faculty.

 

April 17 - UC will hold the Spring Football Game at UC Stadium on Saturday, April 17 at 6:00 p.m.

 

April 21 - UC's Debate on the Future of Print Media will pit John Sturm, president of the Newspaper Association of America, against John Abel, a former broadcast industry executive, new media proponent and co-founder of Team Light Bulb.  Event will follow the same format as the Forum on the Future of Energy, with UC's President, Dr. Edwin Welch, as moderator.  Information on this event is available at http://www.ucwv.edu/events/future_print_media.aspx.
