4/9/2015 - UC School of Pharmacy Signs Agreement with the Cleveland Clinic
Charleston, WV  – The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) has entered a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for six UCSOP fourth year student pharmacists to complete five Advanced  Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE)  rotations at the hospital in Cleveland, OH.

2/6/2015 - University of Charleston School of Pharmacy Full Accreditation Affirmed by ACPE
Charleston, W.Va.  – The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education has affirmed the full accreditation of the University of Charleston’s Doctor of Pharmacy program.

1/30/2015 - UC School of Pharmacy Students Hold Bone Marrow Registry Drive
Charleston, WV – The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) Fellows, in a partnership with BeTheMatch.org, have coordinated a bone marrow registry drive to be held Tuesday, February 3rd from 12-1 pm in the Rotunda at Riggleman Hall on UC’s Charleston campus.  The event is open to the public.

1/19/2015 - UC School of Pharmacy Students Win National Competition
Charleston, WV  – The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) student chapter (SSHP) of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) was named the grand winner of the first ASHP Pharmacy Practice Model Initiatives (PPMI)video competition.  The video was judged on content, quality of production and overall final product.  The judges stated the message delivered by the video exceeded that of other submissions.

1/8/2015 - University of Charleston School of Pharmacy Participates in Script Your Future
Charleston, WV  – University of Charleston School of Pharmacy launched a two month campaign Script Your Future to encourage medication adherence on January 1, 2015.  The campaign is part of a national challenge for schools of pharmacy and health sponsored by the National Consumers League.  This is the third year the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) has participated.

12/17/2014 - University of Charleston Receives Naming Gift for New Sports and Innovation Center
CHARLESTON, W.Va.  - The University of Charleston today announced that a new Innovation Center will honor the memory of Russell and Martha Wehrle.  The new Russell and Martha Wehrle Innovation Center will house both the long-awaited sports arena and a distinctive site for fostering innovation and entrepreneurialism among students, faculty, and community residents.

Charleston, WV  – The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy 8th Annual Honors and Awards Ceremony was held Thursday, April 24, 2014 in Riggleman Auditorium on the University of Charleston campus.  In addition to scholarship recipients the event recognizes faculty members chosen by students for their dedication to the profession and guidance to student pharmacists.

Charleston, WV  – Dr. Matthew Rafa was named pharmacist of the year by the Ohio-Marshall County Pharmacy Association at the organization’s 40th annual seminar.

5/2/2014 - The University of Charleston will hold its 126th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 4th
Charleston, W.Va.  - The University of Charleston will hold its 126th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 4th, at the University campus. While not all students will participate in the commencement ceremonies, this year’s graduating class includes 280 students from all UC locations (Charleston, Beckley, Martinsburg and online), and will include candidates for 160 bachelor’s degrees, 44 master’s degrees and 76 doctorate recipients.

4/17/2014 - Abraham Lincoln Presenter John Mansfield to Serve as University of Charleston Commencement Speaker
Charleston, W.Va. – What would Abraham Lincoln say to the graduates of 2014 – 150 years after his presidency? To help celebrate the bright futures of 280 new graduates, the University of Charleston will call on the wisdom of the 16th President of the United States of America. Famed Abraham Lincoln educational presenter John Mansfield will address UC graduates at Spring Commencement on Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m. on the school’s Riverfront Lawn in Charleston, W.Va.

4/2/2014 - UC School of Pharmacy and Healthcare Professional Schools Awarded Grant
Charleston,WV  - The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy and Healthcare professional schools sought and were awarded a $30,000 grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to examine the factors that might influence current West Virginia rising high school juniors, residing in southern West Virginia, to pursue their education beyond high school, and to expose them to the tremendous rewards of pursuing health care careers.

 

3/25/2014 - UC Pharmacy, Nursing Students Participate in Interprofessional Education Event
The place:  a large stadium-style classroom. At the bottom front, a slender man in a hospital gown sits atop an examination table. He is the focus of attention for West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) third-year medical students and visiting nursing and pharmacy students from the University of Charleston. In this exercise two different teams composed of medical, nursing and pharmacy students will play their roles, examining the patient, taking vitals, taking a history then returning with their differential diagnosis.  In another room, a second interprofessional team awaits their turn.

2/6/2014 - University of Charleston Students Launch Script Your Future Campaign for Medication Adherence Education
Charleston, W.Va.  - This February, an interdisciplinary student team from pharmacy, nursing, athletic training and other health professions from the University of Charleston are joining the national Script Your Future campaign to host a series of community outreach activities, raising awareness of the health consequences of not taking medication as directed.

11/26/2013 - San Antonio pharmacist follows father's footsteps

SAN ANTONIO — As a child, Shannon Corkrean stood behind a pharmacy counter beside her father.

She, a first-grader, counted the pills. He, the pharmacist, recounted them. Her time in the independent pharmacy shadowing her dad taught her about customer service and math. As an adult, she uses the skills every day where she spends most of her time: behind the counter of her own pharmacy.

About a year ago, Corkrean, 27, was working as a Kmart pharmacist — her second job since finishing pharmacy school at the University of Charleston in West Virginia in 2010.
