University of Charleston Announces Cut in Cost of UC-Beckley Residence Hall Rates

Release Date:  Thursday, April 04, 2013

Beckley, W.Va. – University of Charleston Regional President Jerry Forster today announced a special room rate for UC-Beckley residence halls of $1,800 for the 2013-14 academic school year, or half the cost of this year.

The University is implementing many strategies to build the student population of UC-Beckley, but attracting residential students is among the most important. Residential students are typically more involved in campus organizations and events. They are also less likely to drop out.

“The University of Charleston is working very hard to build our enrollment at UC-Beckley, and one of the most critical pieces of this process is creating a vibrant student life environment where students can grow socially and professionally,” said Dr. Forster. “To do this, we need more students living in our residence halls.”

UC-Beckley’s campus features two state-of-the-art residence halls: Hogan Hall and University Hall. Both co-ed halls offer lounges for studying and socializing, laundry facilities and free cable and wireless internet. They are located within walking distance of downtown Beckley and the YMCA.

UC is committed to building a strong campus environment and student experience in Beckley. The University has reached out to individuals, companies and foundations to assist in the start-up of the Beckley location.

“We are actively seeking donor partners to help us with our efforts at UC-Beckley and so far the community has been very receptive,” said Dr. Forster. “Donations to our regional start-up effort will fund, in-part, this room and board discount for all students.”

The special rate applies to double occupancy rooms and is open to students enrolled full-time at the Beckley location.

The 2012-13 academic year marks UC’s 125th anniversary as an academic institution. UC was founded in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary, renamed Morris Harvey College in 1901, moved to Charleston in 1935 and was renamed the University of Charleston in 1978.
