Higher Learning Commission Accepts MSU-UC Teach-Out Plan

Release Date:  Monday, August 20, 2012

Charleston, W.Va. - The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) today approved the teach-out plan submitted by Mountain State University and approved the University of Charleston as MSU's primary partner.

UC also received word that the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved transfer of MSU's physician assistant master's program effective January 1, 2013.

This news comes on the heels of last Friday's announcement in which both schools released details of the teach-out plan submitted to the HLC for approval. MSU students are encouraged to visit www.ucwv.edu/msustudents to learn more about their most clear path to graduation and enroll for fall classes.

Today's announcement by the HLC now allows UC to assist MSU in teaching out 37 undergraduate programs and eight graduate programs through May of 2013. In accord with the teach-out plan, UC will now request permission from the HLC to offer many of the MSU programs in Beckley and other MSU locations as UC programs past May 2013. The goal is to replace MSU in Beckley, Martinsburg, and perhaps other sites with permanent UC centers.

"The HLC approval of Mountain State's teach-out plan assures that the University of Charleston can help current MSU students graduate," said UC President Ed Welch. "Any student who can complete his or her studies by May can graduate under MSU's requirements with either a Mountain State or a University of Charleston degree. This is great news for MSU students."

Additional materials from both schools will be submitted to the HLC by Sept. 7. UC will now move forward with seeking approval from various program-specific accrediting bodies for permission to transfer accreditation from MSU to UC.

On August 1, UC announced plans to explore the opportunity to serve as Mountain State's primary teach-out partner and that the two colleges would look to negotiate a separate agreement under which UC could establish four-year private college centers in Beckley and Martinsburg by the end of the year. The UC campus is approximately 60 miles from the main campus of MSU in Beckley, W.Va., and both schools are private, independent colleges. UC is fully accredited by the HLC. On January 1, 2013, MSU will cease to exist as a institution of higher learning.

The University of Charleston is a private, independent college with approximately 1,400 students from 31 states and 26 countries.  U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks it among the top regional colleges in the South, and it is one of The Princeton Review’s Best 371 Colleges 2012 Edition. The University of Charleston offers 23 undergraduate majors, master’s programs in business and physician assistant studies, and a doctorate in pharmacy.
