Café a la Fikr President Ali Issa presents University of Charleston President Ed Welch with a check for $5,000 and a custom Blenko Glass vase. In background, Café a la Fikr Secretary Feroze Shaik and founder Dr. Syed Saud Ashraf, M.D.
Charleston, W.Va. - Ali Issa, president of Charleston-area Muslim group Café a la Fikr, donated half the proceeds of last week’s Café Comedy Night to the University of Charleston. Issa, along with Café a la Fikr members Feroze Shaik and Syed Saud Ashraf visited President Ed Welch’s office this afternoon to present a check for $5,000 and a custom Blenko Glass vase.
“We are very grateful to Café a la Fikr for their generous donation,” said Dr. Welch. “The Muslim community is an important part of Charleston and we have been fortunate to partner with members on several public forums over the years. We hope to continue our work with Café a la Fikr and others to provoke thought and lead discussion throughout the Kanawha Valley."
Hundreds came out last Friday to hear the musings of nationally-renowned Muslim comedian Fakir Azhar Usman at the Civic Center’s Little Theater. Café a la Fikr decided to donate 50 percent of the proceeds to UC because to the University’s friendly ties to Charleston’s Muslim community. This includes serving as the host of several educational public discussions on relations in the Middle East.
