U.S. News & World Report Names University of Charleston a "Best College for Veterans"

Release Date:  Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Charleston, W.Va.  - The University of Charleston is the fourth best regional college in the South for military veterans, according to rankings released yesterday by U.S. News & World Report.

According to U.S. News, schools making the list had to score well in the areas of graduation rate, faculty resources, reputation and other markers of academic quality. They also had to be certified for the GI Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, two federal initiatives that help veterans reduce the cost of school.

Veterans and current military member make up over 200 of UC's 1,935 students. Students who serve in the West Virginia National Guard are eligible for the Golden Eagle Scholarship. The scholarship aid from UC, combined with federal and state grants, means that members of the National Guard can attend UC at a very affordable cost. The University also offers special National Guard cohorts for its Executive MBA program and certificate programs like ethical hacking.

U.S. News is the third publication to recognize UC this year for its commitment to veterans. Victory Media and Military Advanced Magazine both listed the University in their rankings of top military friendly colleges and universities in the country. Victory Media has recognized UC for five consecutive years.

UC announced in September that it currently ranks number 19 of the 117 colleges in the annual U.S. News Top Regional Colleges list. “Regional colleges” are schools that focus on the undergraduate experience and offer a broad range of programs, but grant fewer than half their degrees in liberal arts disciplines.
