City of Charleston Recognizes American Pharmacists Month

Release Date:  Thursday, October 31, 2013

Charleston, W.Va.   - The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) received a proclamation from the City of Charleston and Mayor Danny as a special tribute to the students, graduates, faculty and staff for the positive impact they have in the city and surrounding areas and in recognition of October 2013 as American Pharmacists Month.  The award was given to Dr. Michelle Easton, Dean and UCSOP students during the Monday, October 21, 2013 Charleston City Council meeting. Earlier in the month, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and Secretary of State Natalie Tennant awarded a similar proclamation to the three schools of pharmacy located in West Virginia.

When asked what the award means to her, Hannah Hutchinson, President UCSOP Student Pharmacists Governance Association, stated, “At UC School of Pharmacy, the pharmacy students are continuously looking for ways that we can serve our community -  to improve the health and quality of life for our neighbors. Hearing the proclamation read during the City Council Meeting about the University Of Charleston School Of Pharmacy, reminded me of the many pharmacists throughout history that have dedicated their lives to serving others. I was thrilled to hear that October is officially recognized as American Pharmacists Month in our state and believe it is very inspiring to be a part of this profession.”

The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy enrolled its first students in 2006, and received full accreditation when the first class graduated in May 2010. Each year, the school educates over 300 student pharmacists in its technology-filled building. The program is known for the close cooperation between students and faculty, an emphasis on professionalism and advocacy, and PharmUC, an on-campus provider of medication therapy management and chronic disease education services for patients.
