Release Date:  Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Charleston, W.Va. – The United Methodist Church presented University of Charleston President Ed Welch with the Francis Asbury Award on Saturday, June 8, at its West Virginia Annual Conference on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Francis Asbury Award recognizes outstanding leadership in supporting, strengthening, and promoting the Church’s higher education ministries. Dr. Welch led UC’s efforts over the last year in replacing Mountain State University and providing a teach-out opportunity for over 500 students who faced uncertain and bleak futures. He was also recognized for the strong leadership he has provided for higher education as a whole in West Virginia during the last 24 years.

“This recognition is due to the University of Charleston team that has grown the University and that undertook the significant effort to expand into Beckley, Martinsburg and online education,” said Dr. Welch. “I am very grateful for the leadership of vice presidents, administrators, faculty and staff members who have made UC successful.”

Since arriving at UC in 1989, Dr. Welch’s leadership has resulted in unparalleled fundraising, expansion of full-time student enrollment, redefining the institution’s mission, transforming its academic programs, adding graduate programs in pharmacy, physician’s assistant and business, constructing seven of the 11 buildings on campus, and acquiring national recognition for UC’s leadership in outcomes-based learning and student assessment.  He also led the creation of a central administrative computing corporation (i.e., ICE), which serves eight colleges and universities across four states.

Along with heading UC, Dr. Welch holds leadership roles through various boards, including the BB&T Corporate Board of Directors, Chairman of the Quality Committee for the Charleston Area Medical Center Health Systems, Association of Governing Board’s Council of Presidents, West Virginia Financial Education Foundation Board and BB&T-West Virginia’s Advisory Board.
