KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the second consecutive year, the University of Charleston Enactus team (formerly SIFE) secured a finish among the top 40 teams in the country on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Enactus National Expo in Kansas City, Mo.
UC Enactus completed over 2,000 community service hours this year. The team conducted 14 sustainable projects, including mentoring over 50 students at the St. Albans Boys & Girls Club, installing water bottle filling stations across UC's campus to combat plastic waste and providing business and marketing support for Timothy's at the Quarrier Diner.
National competition began yesterday at the National Expo, with over 130 teams vying to be named the national championship. Teams across the country work throughout the year with businesses and organizations to improve their local communities and then prepare a 17-minute recap to present in front of business leaders. Students also have the opportunity to network with business leaders from some of the world's top companies, including Wal-Mart, KPMG, Hershey's, Hallmark, Sam's Club, Lowe's and Coca-Cola.
On Tuesday evening, the UC Enactus team won the Lowe's Community Improvement Grand Prize and a $5,000 check. The Lowe's Community Improvement Project Partnership mobilizes Enactus teams to empower communities to raise their quality of life and standard of living by improving public spaces. The team applied for the award based on their volunteer work at the Boy's & Girls Club of St. Albans. Over the last two years, team members have spent hundreds of hours mentoring children and teaching them the importance of staying active to combat West Virginia's obesity epidemic. The money won on Tuesday evening will help fund an outdoor classroom and new playground at the club.
UC was awarded the Campbell's Soup Silver Spoon Award for collecting over 5,000 pounds of food over the year to support the "Let's Can Hunger" campaign. Also, UC Enactus President Adam DeBriae was awarded a $2,500 Jules and Gwen Knapp Scholarship.
