Director of Experiential Education

The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) in Charleston, West Virginia seeks a Director to provide administrative leadership for the Office of Experiential Education.  UCSOP is an instrument of the University of Charleston, designed to prepare pharmacists who will provide comprehensive patient care, advance the profession through research and advocacy, and to serve the community as leaders in rural health care.  The School fosters active participation of faculty, staff and students in an agenda of community outreach, advocacy, and activism as one of the hallmarks of the pharmacy program.  The University of Charleston’s Pharmacy School offers a curriculum that seeks to develop pharmacy practitioners who are able to effectively communicate with diverse populations and work as an integral member of the healthcare delivery team.  

The Director of Experiential Education is responsible for experiential, administrative, and faculty duties, and is a member of the School of Pharmacy’s Executive Committee.  The Director of Experiential Education coordinates the activities, provides direction and vision to the experiential education program and has immediate administrative responsibility for the department.  He/she has a special obligation to build and maintain the experiential program, assembling and maintaining affiliations with appropriate practice sites and preceptors to ensure effective delivery of the IPPE and APPE portions of the curriculum, is responsible for effective and efficient student placement/assignment, mediates conflicts, establishes specific learning objectives and outcomes for the experiential program in conjunction with the Academic Affairs Committee, provides comprehensive preceptor development programming, and works with the quality assurance committee to ensure assessment of experiential learning and service delivery occurs.   The Director of Experiential Education is responsible for managing the financial affairs of their department and is expected to direct members of the department in securing adequate resources to advance the quality and scope of the program.  The Director of Experiential Education reports to the Pharmacy Practice Department chairperson and is responsible for managing the experiential education staff which includes: the assistant director for experiential education, quality assurance representative, preceptors, and the experiential education administrative assistant. 

The successful candidate has a sound understanding of a broad array of pharmacy practice environments, possibilities, and understands the future direction of the profession and cultivates learning environments and experiences that provide corresponding experiences for student pharmacists.  

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate should possess excellent written, oral, analytical, research, and presentation skills; leadership skills to form strong team and collaborative relationships; excellent judgment, a high energy level, patience, and a sense of humor. Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, and the ability to multi-task is a must.   The successful candidate must be dependable, possess a professional demeanor, be student-service oriented, dedicated to student-centered education, and be able to manage multiple support personnel and various diverse stakeholder groups.  The applicant must be able to work in a high-volume environment and work cooperatively in a team setting.  

Bachelor degree in Pharmacy, or terminal degree (Phd, EdD, PharmD), in a pharmaceutical or healthcare disciple is required.  Administrative experience in higher education, health professional programs or a comparable position outside of academia is preferred.  Preference will be given to candidates with prior academic administration experience and experiential teaching, knowledge of education, governmental compliance, and/or health regulatory standards or accreditation.
