Activities & Organizations

The University has always recognized that a significant portion of the total learning experience of each student is acquired outside the classroom. The ability to communicate well with others, to develop, promote, implement, and evaluate ideas and activities and to initiate change when that is desirable are obvious necessities for every educated person. Our graduates are expected to be able to function effectively as team members and be involved, contributing citizens in the community in which they live or work.

The types of experiences needed to develop these skills are made available to our students primarily through co-curricular programs and student leadership, with active involvement in recognized clubs and organizations as a key element.

Greek Organizations

Fraternities and sororities provide an exciting and personally rewarding experience at the University of Charleston. By involving yourself in our Greek system you will become immediately involved in a more traditional and beneficial collegiate experience.

Every fall semester the Greek Council coordinates a campus-wide event labeled "Recruitment." Recruitment is the mutual selection process for joining a fraternity or sorority. This recruitment process allows you to visit and meet the brothers and sisters of each chapter, learn about their activities and tradition, and familiarize yourself with the membership options available to you. Following the recruitment process is the associate education period. This period is designed to educate individuals and develop the organization. The University of Charleston associate education periods are required to last no longer than eight weeks. Membership in one of our Greek chapters will guarantee you an active college experience while at the University of Charleston.

Cultural Activites & Locations

Various groups on The University of Charleston campus arrange frequent art exhibitions by students, faculty, visiting collections, and local and state artists in The Frankenberger Art Gallery located in the Geary Student Union. Student and faculty members of The University of Charleston Department of Music regularly present recitals at which both the standard repertoire and the works of the twentieth century are explored.

The student organization, Theatre Aside, in conjunction with the Department of Mass Communications, produces and directs theater productions. Plays have varied from the children's production of the classic "Winnie the Pooh" to the more contemporary adaptation of "Merry Wives of Windsor" and "Amadeus."

Cultural and academic events such as WorldFest, Black History Month activities, Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration activities and Women's History Month activities are planned by students with financial and advising assistance through the Office of Student Life. Activities range from information tables to lectures. Anyone interested in this type of cultural programming should contact the Office of Student Life.

If you have questions about any of these organizations or are interested in starting a new student organization please contact the Office of Student Life at 357-4745.
