The University has always recognized that a significant portion of the total learning experience of each student is acquired outside the classroom. Active involvement helps students learn to:

- Initiate change when desirable
Our graduates are expected to be able to function effectively as team members and be involved, contributing citizens in the community in which they live or work.

Cultural Activities
Various groups on The University of Charleston campus arrange frequent art exhibitions by students, faculty, visiting collections, and local and state artists in The Frankenberger Art Gallery located in the Geary Student Union.
The University of Charleston Department of Music regularly present recitals at which both the standard repertoire and the works of the twentieth century are explored.
Cultural and academic events such as WorldFest, Black History Month activities, Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration activities, and Disability Awareness Month activities are planned by students with financial and advising assistance through the Office of Student Life. Activities range from information tables to lectures.
