Overview of Program

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is designed to include a wide scope of academic coursework and intense practicum experiences. This approach provides students with increased employment opportunities in the following settings:

  • Clinical
  • Educational
  • Athletic

This design prepares the student to meet the educational competencies and clinical proficiencies necessary to be eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination.

Students can tailor their undergraduate preparation to seek entrance into graduate school programs of their interest, such as sports medicine, athletic training, sports psychology, exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, adult fitness, physical therapy, physician's assistant programs, occupational therapy, and medicine.

Separate Admissions Process

The athletic training major has a separate, competitive admissions process, open to University of Charleston (UC) students who have completed at least one semester. UC students interested in the athletic training education program must submit a completed application packet by March 15 of each year, after which select students are formally admitted.

Students transferring into the Athletic Training Education Program or switching majors after the end of their freshman year must go through the application and interview process. These individuals must contact the ATEP Program Director, as these applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis

Athletic Training

Participation in Intercollegiate Athletics

Students have the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics while pursuing a degree in athletic training. However, the student must accept responsibility for managing the time required to be successful in both areas. These students must give priority to their clinical education during the off-season and nontraditional seasons. Students should work closely with their advisor and Program Director.
