Add a Second iTunes Library

March 14, 2011

Why, you might ask, would anyone want to create a second iTunes Library? Or even a first?

If you have a iPod, iPhone or iPad, you have already answered the second question! In order to access the iTunes Store to buy songs, apps, books, etc. for your iWhatever, you must have iTunes. All of your songs, movies, apps, etc. are stored in your iTunes Library.

If you have more than one iPhone, iPod or iPad, or a combination, each one may be used by a different family member or for a different purpose. You may have completely different taste in music from your spouse or teenager, and it is a pain to have to completely reselect all that music and all of those apps each time you want to synch with what you have on the computer.

Now, you know the answer to the first question! To create a new iTunes library geared to your own iThing:

  1. Hold down the Shift key when you click to open iTunes. A dialog box “Choose iTunes Library” will open with a choice to Choose Library, or Create Library. Click Create Library.
  2. Give the folder a name that tells what or who this library is for, like “DebiPad”.
  3. Click Save.
  4. A blank version of iTunes will open. To add files to this new Library, click File/Add File to Library (or Add Folder to Library). Then just browse for the files, apps or movies that you want for this personal Library. Most of the files you want will be in My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Media.

The next time you open iTunes, hold down the Shift key when you click the iTunes icon, and you can “Choose Library”.
