The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named the victors of the Presidents' and Commissioner's Cups for the 2006-07 athletic season. The trophies honor all-around athletic excellence among its member schools.
The University of Charleston has captured both cups for the first time in school history. The Golden Eagles prevailed in last season's Commissioner's Cup standings to end a 14-year streak by West Virginia Wesleyan, but the Presidents' Cup victory is a first for UC since the 1997-98 season.
Charleston won or shared league championships in women's tennis, volleyball, men's golf, and softball. The Golden Eagles added second place finishes in football, women's basketball, and women's soccer.
Two-time defending champion Shepherd finished a close second in the Presidents' Cup standings. West Liberty State placed third with Alderson-Broaddus and Wheeling Jesuit rounding out the top five.
West Virginia Wesleyan was the second place finisher in the Commissioner's Cup standings, followed by Wheeling Jesuit, West Liberty State, and Alderson-Broaddus.
The Presidents' Cup is awarded to the school that has the highest average score for sports sponsored within the WVIAC. Points are awarded based on finishes in the regular season of each sport. The number of schools participating for each championship also factors into the rating.
The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded based on the school's finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC.
WVIAC champions are determined by the regular season standings in sports that receive NCAA automatic qualification for the tournament winners. Tournament champions in all other sports are considered conference champions. The tournament winner is considered the WVIAC champion in sports with a divisional setup.
