CHARLESTON, W.Va. After speculation that hometown sweetie Jennifer Garner might not be able to attend a University of Charleston fundraiser in September, event organizers are betting she'll be there.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are scheduled to attend a fundraiser at the University of Charleston.
Garner and her husband, Ben Affleck, are scheduled to host a fundraiser, titled "Starry Starry Night," for a new, multimillion-dollar athletic complex at the University of Charleston.
The university already has sold about 800 tickets, and few remain available at $250 a piece.
Corey Palumbo, a friend and former George Washington High School classmate of Garner, said he's received phone calls from people concerned that the former "Alias" star won't appear at the event.
Palumbo said he's not sure why that's been heavily rumored.
"I'm completely expecting her to be there," said Palumbo, a House of Delegates member, state Senate candidate and Charleston lawyer. "Of course, anything could change for anyone. She always likes coming back here and being able to spend time with family and friends.
"As far as Ben goes, I'm not sure if his presence is as certain as hers. But I haven't heard that he will not be there."
Garner and Affleck are expecting their second child in October or November, according to entertainment sources. Garner, however, has not confirmed the reports.
Garner's suspected pregnancy was revealed this month when Victor Garber, her former co-star from the TV series "Alias," confirmed she was five months pregnant.
Garner and Affleck were recently spotted hunting for a new home in Los Angeles, where she was "struggling to hide a distinctive baby bump," according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The couple has a 2-year-old daughter, Violet.
The Charleston fundraiser is scheduled for Sept. 19. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the Erma Byrd Gallery of Riggleman Hall, followed by the fundraising event at 7:30 p.m. outside on the university's riverfront.
If Garner can't make the date, university officials have a backup plan.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are scheduled to attend a fundraiser at the University of Charleston.
University spokeswoman Jennie Ferretti said Garner would make herself available via a taped video message or live satellite feed and would host a VIP reception the next time she's in Charleston.
"In the event she can't make it, we'll try to reschedule that (VIP reception) on short notice," Ferretti said.
Five levels of sponsorship packages are being sold for the fundraiser. Anyone donating $5,000 will get eight tickets to the event and two tickets to a VIP reception. Other packages are for those who donate $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000. The largest package includes 32 tickets and 20 VIP tickets.
Major sponsors so far include Chesapeake Energy, the Elliot Foundation, Reed Brothers and Wells Fargo.
Donations will fund an athletic complex that's projected to cost at least $20 million. The complex will house the men's and women's basketball programs and the volleyball program. It also will include athletic coaching offices, locker rooms for softball and men's and women's tennis and training facilities.
"Starry Starry Night" will go on, regardless of who's there, organizers say.
"The event itself - we're hoping that people will say they haven't seen anything like it before," Ferretti said. "This is her hometown. They're both on board as honorary hosts and are happy to have their names on the invitation. You can't promise that anybody will be at any particular place on a day in September."
"Starry Starry Night" also will honor the lives of distinguished alumni Louise and Mario Palumbo, the late parents of Corey Palumbo. Mario Palumbo represented Kanawha County in the state Senate for many years and at one point was Senate judiciary chairman. He later became state attorney general.
Louise Palumbo was fashion director for the Stone & Thomas department store chain for decades and often was called on to lead fashion-related events in the community.
