UC is honored with an "Award of Distinction"
Charleston Area Alliance Names UC “SIMPLY THE BEST!”

Each year, the Charleston Area Alliance solicits nominations for its "Expect the Best" awards, which recognize local businesses and organizations that promote quality of life at home, at work and in the community. The awards are based on a two-part nomination consisting of a written profile and a presentation that addresses a specific list of economic development and other criteria.

At this year’s awards celebration in May, the Alliance went beyond naming the “Expect the Best” winners by presenting a special honor, titled “Simply the Best,” to UC for its "above and beyond" contributions to the community. In a video prepared for the occasion, the Alliance highlighted the renaissance of the University in the past twenty years into a bright spot in the landscape of the city, the Kanawha Valley and the state of West Virginia.

Among the achievements noted in support of the award were: 2008 full-time enrollment, at 1,316, is the highest since 1971; UC’s curriculum, "Learning Your Way," was profiled as a model for outcomes-based education in The New York Times Magazine; the first doctoral program, the UC School of Pharmacy, opened in 2006, and more than 1,000 applicants vied for a slot in the class of 80 that will enter school this August; an on-campus fitness center has been added for employees and students; and a new graduate school of business will open this fall in the former Boll Furniture building in downtown Charleston.

The Alliance lauded UC for providing its 250 full-time employees with a range of benefits, including 100 percent tuition reimbursement for themselves and their families, and for being a vital part of the economy of Charleston, most visibly by hosting public events on campus, including the popular Symphony Sunday, "Blues, Brews and BBQs" and "Wine and All that Jazz" events. Also vital to receiving this recognition was the fact that the UC Board of Trustees has adopted and implemented a comprehensive strategic plan for the institution that included remodeling the curriculum, implementing a campus master plan, and a conducting a capital campaign.

The University, referred to by the Charleston Area Alliance as “the miracle on MacCorkle,” is proud to be recognized not only as a leader in higher education, but also as a responsible, progressive, involved and integral part of the Charleston business community.
