Review: Craig Morgan delivers goods
By Phil Perry

You might think that watching a concert after sitting through a college football game would be hard on the backside. This might be true for some, but Craig Morgan and his band delivered the goods with enthusiasm Saturday afternoon at University Charleston Stadium.

I thought I’d have to admit to not being familiar with Morgan’s material until a week ago, but after hearing hit after hit performed, I realized this wasn’t completely the case.

The crowd was excitable and alive as the band churned out “That’s What I Like About Sunday,” “I Got You” and “Redneck Yacht Club.” With five of his six band members hailing from West Virginia, including bassist and Charleston native Perry Richardson (ex Firehouse, Alice Cooper), the show was a homecoming of sorts.

What I really loved about Morgan was his ability to laugh at himself.

His cover of John Conley’s “Rose Colored Glasses” was dead on. His voice was rich and clear for the one-hour set, despite a chilly breeze.

The evening came to a climax with the band tearing into “International Harvester,” a current top-10 hit from Little Bit of Life, Morgan’s latest record.

With a lot of cookie-cutter country acts topping the charts, Morgan is a breath of fresh air. He is a quality songwriter performing his own material.

Cheers to Andy Spradling and the University of Charleston for going out on a limb and trying something fresh. With the north side of the field near capacity, I would call the evening a success. Hopefully, this will become a trend and continue in the future.
