Women's Basketball Shuts Down A-B

  • Release Date:Thursday, February 18, 2010
PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The University of Charleston women’s basketball team proved that its shutdown defense was still intact as the WVIAC leading Golden Eagles held Alderson-Broaddus to shooting a mere 30 percent as UC claimed a 72-45 victory, Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles (16-7, 13-5) dominated from the opening tip by quickly taking control of the game with a 17-0 lead, which continued to grow into a 29-4 advantage midway thru the first half.  The Battlers (7-16, 5-13) were finally able to find the gaps in the UC defense to score 20 points over the last seven minutes before break, but it was too little as their halftime deficit was 18 points at 44-26.

Alderson-Broaddus never threatened in the second half as they could not overcome the deep hole they had dug in the first half, while UC never relented offensively pulling away by as much as 34 points which came with just four minutes left in the contest. The teams traded baskets down the stretch as the Golden Eagle bench got quality minutes in securing the 27 point win.

The University of Charleston shot over 50 percent (30-of-59) from the field for the seventh time this season, while force AB into 20 turnovers and just 17-of-57 shooting. UC managed to hold two of the Battlers five starters scoreless.

Junior Lindsey Ketner (Wapakoneta, OH/Wapakoneta) led the Golden Eagles with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Terenna Dixon (Morgantown, W.Va./University) followed close behind with 14 points and seven rebounds. Classmate Moneka Slaughter (Barberton, OH/Barberton) shot 5-of-7 off the bench for 10 points and three rebounds.

UC returns to the court on Saturday, February 20 at 5:30pm when it travels to Bluefield State who holds a 1-23 record for the season.
