After completing a spectacular season, the University of Charleston men’s soccer team sat down for a special luncheon with UC President Dr. Ed Welch. The Golden Eagles were honored for their successful season (19-4-0) which included WVIAC Regular Season & Tournament Championships along with a trip to the NCAA DII National Tournament that would take UC all the way to the Elite 8. “It is certainly an honor to be recognized by Dr. Welch for the boys’ hard work and accomplishments,” Coach Duernberger stated. “We take pride in how intense and demanding our training sessions are throughout the whole season. Our players put the effort in and it paid off. One of the biggest things I’m proud of is to send our seniors off on such a high note. They have helped build this program back to the level where our staff and players want Charleston soccer to be.” These seniors include Gabe Haynes (Charleston, WV), Lamar Cancino (Nassau, Bahamas), Bryce Larsen, (Lawrenceville, GA) and Robert Spain (Alexander City, AL).
Friday’s luncheon included a question and answer session in which Dr. Welch asked the team about the season’s highlights. The players took turns answering questions about their feelings on how the success occurred. “This team is a family who enjoys winning and working for each other,” Coach Duernberger stated. “Today we are excited and thankful for our accomplishments, but when we get back from winter break our guys understand that there were still four teams ahead of us who had the opportunity to play in Tampa at the 2009 NCAA DII Final Four. With that in mind, I’m excited for our off-season workouts to see how hard these guys will push each other to get better.”
