Liggins and Russell Lead UC Men Over Glenville State

  • Release Date:Tuesday, March 02, 2010
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Juniors Jonathan Liggins (Euclid, Ohio) and Bahaadar Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) torched visiting Glenville State for a combined 55 points as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 93-69 victory in the first round of the WVIAC tournament, Tuesday night.

The Pioneers (7-21) began the game by creating a dominating presence in the paint as they took a six point advantage midway through the first half, but that is the point where Russell and Liggins found their marks from behind the arc.  The dynamic duo led the UC charge from behind with the three-ball to quickly take over the game and pull the Golden Eagles out to a 10 point lead at half. GSU outscored UC 24-14 in the paint for the opening half, yet had no answer for the deep threat.

The halftime break did not hinder the shooting efforts of the Golden Eagles as they closed the contest shooting 52 percent in the second half to pull away as GSU never threatened.  UC had eight players score led by Liggins with 28 and Russell at 27. Brandon Ross was the only other Golden Eagle in double-digits with 10 points and four rebounds.

The UC men’s team will return to action for the second-round of the WVIAC tournament as they face Fairmont State at 8:00 pm on Thursday night at the Charleston Civic Center.
