Re: Coach Greg White announces resignation
Date: March 18, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University of Charleston Men’s Basketball Coach Greg White announced his resignation today at a 2:30 p.m. press conference.
“After considerable thought, I have decided to move on from the UC coaching position,” said White. “I have enjoyed tremendously the last several years at UC working as the Assistant to the President under Dr. Welch and coaching the men’s basketball team. However, I have had several terrific opportunities come my way this past year.”
“I want to pursue public motivational speaking and other entrepreneurial activities that are a direct conflict with my time and coaching at UC. I would like to thank Dr. Welch and Athletic Director Tom Nozica for their tremendous support. They have been fantastic,” he said.
This promising future is not without a little regret. According to White, “The most difficult part of having a coaching position is leaving the young men that I have been privileged to coach. This year’s team had a very good year and I expect greater things to come for them next season. I wish each player well as they continue their education and basketball careers.”
White has amassed a 361-315 overall coaching record, including a record of 19-11 this season. He was named WVIAC Coach of the Year in 1992, the same year that his UC team was the WVIAC champion. The following year, White’s team won the WVIAC tournament for the first time in 20 years. He is equally proud of the fact that 95% of his players who completed their eligibility have graduated with a degree.
His record at UC was 68-70 during his first tenure at the school (1990-1995) and 127-77 from 2003–2010, for an overall record at UC of 195-147. This ranks him second only to Rich Meckfessel as the winningest coach in UC history.
“I am proud to say that I hired Greg White twice,” said Dr. Edwin Welch, UC president. “Greg represents the best values of the University of Charleston. He recruits talented athletes, follows their academic success, cares how they represent the university and pushes them to graduate. I am grateful for his friendship and the 12 years of leadership he has given our basketball program. I hope he stays close to the university and I wish him much, much success in all of his endeavors.”
White promised continued interest in UC and its basketball program, saying, “I promise full support to my successor to help with a smooth transition in all facets of the job. I look forward to my future and will continue to support Dr. Welch as he continues the mission of the University of Charleston. I also look forward to supporting the team as a season ticket holder as my time permits.”
