CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Senior Kaitlyn Arick (Louisville, Ohio/East Canton) found herself all alone under the basket with 10:13 remaining in the first half to break the 1,000 career point mark to become the 28th player to score 1,000 points in UC history.
The Golden Eagles (18-7, 15-5) used the momentum behind Arik to pull away from Concord (13-12, 10-10) in the last five minutes of first half action. UC used a 14-0 run over the last 4:52 in order to take a 44-25 advantage into the break. The first 20 minutes saw the University of Charleston also dominate the boards as they outscored CU 17-2 in second-chance points.
The second half held the same fate for the Lions as they could make a dent into the Golden Eagle lead, which grew to as much as 27 points with five minutes remaining in the contest. CU played hard until the final buzzer, but a solid defensive effort to force 20 turnovers and power in the paint to hold a 35-28 rebounding advantage proved enough for UC as they cruised to a 75-56 win.
Arik concluded the evening with 17 points and four assists, while Lindsey Ketner (Wapakoneta, OH/Wapakoneta) led the Golden Eagles with 19 points and four steals. Tianna Beatty (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) and Tarenna Dixon (Morgantown, W.Va./University) each chipped in 12 points with Moneka Slaughter (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) following close behind with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
UC returns to action when it travels to WVIAC contender Fairmont State on Thursday, February 25 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
