#15 Slippery Rock Slides by UC Men’s Soccer 1-0

The No. 15 nationally ranked Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team won its fifth straight game Wednesday, defeating the University of Charleston (W. Va.), 1-0, in non-conference action at Egli Field.

Alex Swartz scored his third goal of the season and the lone goal of the game in the 30th minute, chipping in a rebound after UC Goalkeeper Sean Teepen pushed aside Benjamin Lloyd’s free kick into the post.  The ball then bounced back across the goal line for Swartz to tap in.  “We lost our marks on the set piece after our keeper made the save.  The key after the game was for the boys to understand we need to correct an issue like this, because we are glad we have the opportunity to play again.  Had this been a postseason match, we would be ending our season on a bad note,” Coach Duernberger said.

Charleston came out firing in the second half and controlled possession for much of the period, but could not find the back of the net. The Golden Eagles best chance came with 1:40 to play, but they were called for offsides, negating what could have been the tying marker.  “We had our chances.  We put ourselves in positions to have the people we want with the ball inside our opponent’s box.  Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find the back of the net today,” said Duernberger.

Greg Blum played the entire game in goal for The Rock, earning his sixth win and fourth shutout of the season after registering six saves.

Sean Teepen was credited with the loss after allowing one goal and recording three saves.

Charleston finished the game with advantages of 13-7 in total shots, 6-4 in shots on goal and 3-1 in corner kicks.

With the loss, Charleston drops to 5-2 overall and Slippery Rock improves to 6-1. Charleston returns to action on Sunday at 2:00 pm against WVIAC conference opponent University of Pitt-Johnstown.
