What are Praxis exams?

The Praxis Series™ tests are taken by individuals entering the teaching profession as part of the certification process required by many states and professional licensing organizations.

The Praxis Series™ tests measure teacher candidates’ knowledge and skills. The tests are used for licensing and certification processes and include:

Praxis™ Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) 

Praxis I® Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST®) 

These tests measure basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. In addition to licensure, these tests are often used to qualify candidates for entry into a teacher education program.

Praxis II® Subject Assessments

These tests measure subject-specific content knowledge, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills, that you need for beginning teaching.

How do I know which Praxis exam to take?

The Praxis website provides detailed information on state requirements. See: http://www.ets.org/praxis/wv  Please also consult advisors in the Education department at your home school.  UC students should reference their Teacher Education Handbook or speak directly with Calandra Lockhart, Chair of the Department of Education, with any questions pertaining to specific exams and deadlines.

When can I take a Praxis exam?

How do I register for a Praxis exam?

You must register for the Praxis exam on the Praxis website. University of Charleston (Charleston and Beckley locations) will be location options. 

How much does a Praxis exam cost?

Praxis exams range from $70 to $150 depending on the exact test you are taking. For a  full listing of prices please see the Praxis website: http://www.ets.org/praxis/about/fees
